Announcements and Appeals - COALITION FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING

June 14 is National Disability Day in Georgia

Numerous barriers for people with disabilities in Georgia impede the full realization of the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the 2006 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and require an immediate response from the state.

Among the current acute issues, today we want to highlight the need for timely and systemic change and the transition to the biopsychosocial model of granting disability status, as it is impossible to implement effective and tailored to the needs of the country. In the context of the medical model.

A group was set up with the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia to work on the transition to a social model of granting disability status. The work of this group was stopped without any explanation, which means that the change of the model was postponed for an indefinite period of time.

Despite the current difficult situation, we call on the Government of Georgia to resume the work of the group as soon as possible and to plan concrete steps for the introduction of a biopsychosocial model!

We invite you to cooperate!
